The Wonders of a 4-Day Work Week: Reducing Stress at Work

The traditional 5-day, 9-5 work week has been the status quo now for decades, but recently the concept of a 4-day work week has been gaining traction. Now, you're probably wondering how is such a favourable situation possible? Won't the company suffer as a result? Well, the evidence shows that people can be as productive over 4 days allowing them to dedicate 3 days to rest, self-care, relaxation, family time, and leisure activities.

So, what does it actually mean to work a 4-day work week?

A 4-day work week is when a traditionally 5-day work week is reduced to 4 days with the idea of increasing productivity and working more efficiently. The main concept behind the 4-day work week is that the same amount of work can be completed in 4 days while still enjoying 3 days off a week - a 4-day work week isn’t a compressed work schedule, but rather reduced hours.

Vetro absolutely loved the idea of a 4-day work week and at the start of 2023, we officially took the plunge to implement a 4-day work week with 100% pay and benefits.

Just 4 months into the 4-day work week concept and the benefits have been extraordinary. The benefits of a 4-day work week are immense, and this blog will explain why a 4-day work week is beneficial for both employers and employees.

The Benefits of a 4-Day Work Week

Increased Productivity

The primary benefit of a 4-day work week is increased productivity. Several studies have been conducted showing that employees are more productive in a reduced work week. A study conducted by Stanford economists examined the effects of a 4-day work week on clerical workers in the state of Utah. They found that productivity increased by 40% over the course of a year and that the shorter workweek improved employee morale and satisfaction.

The main idea behind increased productivity in a 4-day work week is focused work. Employees have fewer days that they need to work but are still able to accomplish the same amount of work. This means that employees have fewer distractions and are able to focus on their tasks with fewer interruptions.

Reduced Stress

Reduced stress is another benefit of the 4-day work week. Working fewer hours per week means that employees are less likely to become burned out and are able to devote more of their time to hobbies and leisure activities. This improved work-life balance helps employees decompress and reduces the amount of stress that they experience not only in the workplace but in their everyday lives.

Employees with a 4-day work week also benefit from having more time for family and friends. With more time available during the week, employees are able to spend more time with their loved ones and maintain healthier relationships.

Improved Employee Mental Health

A 4-day work week also helps improve employee mental health. Working fewer hours leads to reduced stress levels and a lower risk of burnout. Employees are able to better manage their stress levels and are more likely to maintain a positive outlook on their current situation.

Improved Work-Life Balance

Improved work-life balance is another benefit of the 4-day work week. Employees are able to have more time for themselves and devote energy to the things that are important to them. This includes hobbies, activities, self-care, and leisure, all of which are essential for a healthy and fulfilling life.

More Time for Self-Care

Having more time available during the week provides employees with more opportunities for self-care. Employees are able to take the time that they need to take care of themselves and dedicate energy to the things that make them feel happy and fulfilled.

Implementing a 4-day work week in your organisation can have numerous benefits for both employers and employees. It is a great way to promote productivity, reduce stress, and improve work-life balance within a business. A 4 day work week requires careful consideration, but can ultimately lead to a happier and more productive workforce.

Are you ready to transform the way you work and change the way you live? - Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo and join the 4-day work week revolution!
